APPLiA Statistical Report

The home appliance industry in Europe at a glance

Every year, APPLiA - the European industry association for the home appliance sector - publishes a statistical report showcasing the impact of the sector on our economy and our daily lives.

This year, they wanted to move away from their earlier, illustration-heavy reports, in favour of a more serious style with crystal-clear visuals mixed with impactful editorial content.

The brief

Baryon Design was able to deliver the perfect fit for APPLiA’s need. We were able to assist the organization through the entire process, from critical reflection about the available content, hierarchically structuring the information, building a clear but recognizable information design style, to developing a high-quality printed report as well as an online interactive version that works both on desktop and mobile.

In the analysis phase we started by mapping all of the available data and content, and structuring it into a hierarchical overview. Together with APPLiA we built a completely new Table of Contents for the 2023 version of the Statistical Report, that much better suits the needs of the intended audience.

Our information design team developed a range of chart types to be used throughout the report, including common bar and line charts, but also treemaps, dumbbell charts, and Sankey diagrams. These charts needed to work not only in a printed report, but also in an online version - for desktop, tablet as well as mobile screen sizes.

Around these charts, a user-friendly report was built enabling the readers to see the entire structure at a glance, and to quickly jump between different chapters, topics, and pieces of editorial content. Three interactive visuals were built from the ground up, allowing users to explore complex Eurostat datasets in a straightforward and logical way.

The APPLiA statistical report has a web version where you can easily browse through all the stories and visuals.

The year report has interactive visuals where you can consult the right data by switching up the parameters.

Every visual and story, bundled in an attractive, physical version.
